Economic Trade Mission to Japan 2017

On Tuesday 29th of August, 2017, at 16:30 hrs we will be organizing our 2nd Information Session

Four centuries ago in the year of 1598 the VOC Ship ‘’de Liefde’’ departed from the Port of Rotterdam on a trade mission to East Asia and Japan. Now Japan and the Netherlands look back on a trade history of over 400 years and counting. Through these 400 years friendship, trade and investment blossomed between the two countries ever since.

This year Rotterdam Partners is proud to present this Economic Mission to Japan from 9 – 14 October 2017.

Why Japan today?
Japan is the third largest economy of Asia and the fourth largest of the world. In 2015 Japan imported products with an amount of almost US$600Billion. Japan is well known for its large economy, focus on innovation, ease of doing business and historic sights. Also is Japan one of the largest trading partners of the Netherlands and with the upcoming Economic Partnership Agreement between the EU and Japan, more possibilities between our two countries will occur.

Offshore Wind & Maritime
Japan will speed up its investments in offshore wind and is showing strong interest in the existing supply-chain present in Rotterdam and the Netherlands. Rotterdam Partners will collaborate with the Japan Wind Power Association to make this program successful in Tokyo. Also a visit to the first offshore wind park in Kita-Kyushu (44 turbines first project) is scheduled.
Also is the maritime industry recovering in Japan. The lower yen, coupled with exceptional efficiency and high-tech designs, have made Japanese shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers among the most competitive in the world. The Japanese maritime market is mature, stable and reliable.

Creative
In Japan the creative sector represents many industries linked to lifestyle and culture such as architecture, modern art, (product)design, fashion, gaming etc. Tokyo ranks as Asia's most creative city. Tokyo is hustling and bustling with creativity of all types. There is an endless amount of inspiration in Tokyo with something new at every turn, making it a city where anything seems possible. Already several well-known designers from the Netherlands and Rotterdam have established their business in Japan. Two relevant exhibitions will be visited in Tokyo and Osaka.

Life Science & Health
Japan's ageing society and rapidly developing technology are pushing the need to control healthcare costs. The latest available figure states that national healthcare costs total EUR325 billion, and is still increasing. This is a common challenge for the medical devices industries and R&D for the future. Relevant events in Yokohama/Tokyo will be visited as well as a visit to the LS&H cluster in Osaka. Japan in general offers opportunities for the Rotterdam Life Science & Health cluster.
